There are many dogs (and many animals), understandably, who are simply just not amenable to being confined to small spaces - and to force them into those very small spaces can be quite damaging to them, and incredibly stressful/scary for them.

If crate training isn't an option for your dog, then I'd instead use an Iris Pen (this is what we used) from Amazon or Walmart. It keeps the dog confined and safe, but there is at least room to move around.
