I had the same issue. I also got the carrier that PetSmart advised me on. They said that as long as he could turn around and lie down in it, it was fine. He HATED it! We bought a huge open wire cage that he seems to like. He also rarely goes to the bathroom in it and waits for us to take him outside. There's room for some toys and a blanket, so I know he is comfortable if I have to leave for a few hours.
