I just wanted to add that I got Casie when she was 5 months and Scottie had just turned 2 years, for the same reason as you, in that I wanted Scottie to not feel so lonely during my work hours.
I too used to take Scottie everywhere. He's amazing - never makes a peep in the dog carrier and is really well behaved in the car and while we're out. But since we got Casie, we've been leaving him home.
It makes me a little sad that things are not the same anymore. We don't take him with us anymore - we could, but then I don't want to leave Casie at home alone. She doesn't travel well and vomits in the car due to motion sickness. Not only that, it's harder to take two out - two carriers / heavier etc.
I sometimes wonder if it would have been better to just have a single 'child' because we really enjoyed taking Scottie everywhere. But then, at home, when the two of them love playing together and taking walks together, it makes me think it was the right choice.
Anyway. Long story short, things will change. There may be trade-offs.
As for getting along, they took about a couple weeks to get used to each other, about a month to be comfortable, and about 1.5 months before they enjoyed each other's company and started playing a lot! Scottie was a very very very jealous first child.
