Great advises from members above! The only other thing I can think of is to leave a clothing you've worn so Max would be able to snuggle in it.
Also, I've seen some new toys that are in development which seem ideal for when you're away... Below is the one I'm really interested in at the moment but there are somewhat similar toys out there. Might be worth checking out.
