For the waterproof mat, you can buy a piece of linoleum at a home improvement center. I think WalMart might even have some. A tarp might also work, but linoleum would be easier to clean.
Puppy wipes would not be sufficient for cleaning the head thoroughly. I stressed about water and shampoo in Max's ears and eyes when he was a puppy. Don't worry too much. I use a measuring cup to pour water over my boys' heads.
After the bath, I make sure to dry their ears well, making sure to keep the warm air from the hairdryer moving constantly so as not to burn them. Sometimes I use an ear cleaner with a drying agent, dropping just a little in their ear canal with a Qtip (don't put the Qtip in the canal, and make sure not to get the solution in the eyes!).
We have never had an ear infection yet.
