I agree with the puppy smell. Sounds weird, but I believe in it.
My Scottie took one sniff of Casie when she came home at 5 months and he was scared! This was before she even put her puppy-play moves on him.

If the puppy is friendly, they may eventually get along as they become more acquainted.
