Make sure the breeder is reputable. Be sure you can visit the breeder and see the parents and puppies. Be sure to get a health guarantee, and that the dogs are registered with a reputable organization (AKC in the US). Ask about the health and weights of the parents--you don't want a puppy that will grow up to be too small and unhealthy. It will be hard to tell anything about the personalities of the dogs at such a young age, especially the newborn, but look for alertness and playfulness in the one that is a few weeks old. Many breeders release their puppies to their new owners at 8 weeks of age (which is when I got my Bella), but see if the breeder will hold onto the puppy until 12 weeks of age.
