Usually adding an opposite sex dog does go well after a few days of getting used to each other. Typically adult dogs get a bit put out by puppy antics but adjust quite well. I added a puppy when my big boy was 8yrs old and my Yorkie 6yrs old. After a wk they were all a good pack together.
