Cricket is my 3 year old Yorkie and she has NEVER been vaccinated for lepto. When she was a puppy she had surgery to fix a liver shunt and my vet never wanted to give her the vaccine because Of her compromised liver. I live in Texas, ( close to the city of Arlington and my family and I are part of a page for our neighborhood where someone posted that she and her husband have lost 2 yorkies in the last 6 months due to lepto. She was encouraging others to get the vaccine. Cricket just so happens to be going to the vet on Saturday so I'm going to talk to her about it, but I wanted others thoughts. I sent the neighbor a message that posted her post and asked her if she ever took her dogs out anywhere and she said they were always in their backyard. Thanks in advance. |
How many cases of lepto have occured in your area? If this is the only two cases, let sleeping dogs lie.....your pup is a special medical issue....I would contact the vet school at A&M, tell them your delima and concern, and see what the vets there recommend. You have to take statistics into account....there are hundreds of vets out there who pay their bills from the money made off vaccinations....and many of them jump right into the frame of mind that all dogs need annual vaccines....we all know that is not true now....you need to determine what the incidences of lepto have been in your area, and then I would contact a vet school that has nothing to gain from YOU by any decision they would make about "to give" or "not to give"...but you need to find out how many cases of lepto have occured in your area before you go there.....then you need to take you own baby's surgical history into consideration.
