Then, they sell the puppies hoping to make money, to more irresponsible pet buyers. I guess it boils down to breeders only wanting to sell to responsible dog owners. Breeders LOVE their dogs and they want only the very very best for their dogs' offspring.

The large number of dogs at animal rescues shows that the public at large are not responsible when it comes to owning pets. Each year, there are so many dogs euthanized because there aren't enough funds to keep them alive. Vancouver, BC has rescued so many dogs from California kill-shelters over the past years. Not to mention, there is an over population of dogs in general, everywhere. So, that in itself is the reason why all pet-dogs should be spayed/neutered.
Just want to add to the above...on the wagaware.com website, they state this:
The Homeless Dog Problem
Unfortunately, not all dogs lead a charmed life. Each year, approximately 4 million healthy, adoptable pets are euthanized in US shelters. That means 9,000 per day, or 6+ per minute, are killed. Most people do not realize that an estimated 90% of dogs in shelters are adoptable, the majority are there because of human problems (i.e., divorce, foreclosure) as opposed to the dog's issues, ¼ of all shelter dogs are purebreds and almost any kind of dog can be adopted; and, yet, most do not make it out alive.
This is why we shouldn't breed our pet-dogs.
