I've heard this from other people. I do not think it is true because I cut Max's hair from 13 weeks to about 6 months. Not really short, but I tried to do a puppy cut on his body using scissors.
I decided that I wasn't very good at cutting, so I let him grow a full coat which he still has. Full coat by default.
