At 8 weeks of age, our Bella could not hold her pee all night, so we kept her crate on our night stand and set the alarm for 2 AM to take her to her pee pad for a potty break. Over time, she learned to wake us up when she needed to go. We call that time the "morning woofing." As an adult, she can sleep in her crate all night without waking us up. It took us a full year to get to that point, though. I'm only mentioning this because keeping an 8 week old puppy in a crate in the living room all night when they are such a tender age *might* be a little unsafe for the dog if something goes wrong in the night. If it works for you, though, then that's fine. Our sleeping crate only has bedding in it, and is just large enough for Bella to stand up and turn around in. She finds it quite cozy for sleeping and it fits perfectly on our night stand.

Other than that, the x-pen idea sounds like a good one. Be sure to have food and water available if you are away for any length of time.
