Perfectly normal.
Was it a new toy? Max humped only one toy when he was a pup. It was a fuzzy lamb that I put away. No more humping.
I believe correcting a dog is fine if you want to discourage the behavior. Do it gently, maybe just redirect attention and remove the triggers for humping.
