I'm a stay at home mom so I'm not gone very often. However, when I do need to be gone I shut off a room with a baby gate ( I like to use the baby gate 'cause I don't think that they feel as closed in and they can see out). I leave food, water, their crate, a piddle pad (in a holder otherwise it's a chew toy) and a couple of toys. I use a room w/o carpeting so it doesn't matter if she goes on the floor ( if she does pee on the floor use a paper towel to wipe it up, then press the towel on the piddle pad to give it her smell and help her get the idea).
Also depending where you live, you may be able to find a doggy day care. There is no such thing here, but I've heard about them. lol
