When I first got Scottie at 5 mo, he was also very itchy, shedding a lot of flaky skin / dandruff. I desperately tried many things, after the vet said it wasn't fleas...
* oatmeal baths (where I ground up my own oatmeal in a food processor) - not sure whether this worked but it was very difficult getting the oatmeal bits out of his hair.
* used only oatmeal and aloe vera non-fragrance shampoo (I bathed him myself)
* changed to high quality grain-free kibble, feeding in ceramic or steel bowls only
* made sure to give only filtered water (no tap water)
* combed his hair daily to stimulate natural oils to prevent dry skin
* gave daily 'licks' of organic coconut oil off my fingers
* vacuumed his area often and changed the towels he slept on often
I'm not sure what it was, whether it was one of the many things I tried or a combination of the above or that he just grew out of it. It was pretty abrupt that he suddenly stopped scratching incessantly, so I guess I did something right (I just don't know what it was lol)! His hair and skin is normal now and only scratches the occasional normal amount for a dog.
