I am a brand new Yorkie owner! I get to pick up my little baby boy on Thursday afternoon. His name is NITRO and he is 1LB 8OZ. He was born on February 7th, 2016. I am so excited to bring him home I could cry! Ha. I can't wait to be a yorkie mommy!! I am taking him to the vet on Friday afternoon for his first check up. The breeder gave him his first dose of PARVO shot, but I believe that's it. When I called the vet she said he should get distemper and influenza... does anyone know what all shots he should get other than parvo and how much they cost (estimation)?

I AM SO NERVOUS THOUGH!!! I've always had big outside dogs, never a little inside dog. I'm not really sure what to expect. I am pretty sure I have everything I need for him to arrive.
Does anyone have any help on what to expect, either with bringing him home the first week, taking him to his first vet check up, or any stories or warnings? haha! Please help this new mommy! Thank you all for you help in advanced and I am glad I can be apart of this yorkie forum with you all.

Take Care!

This is why as a breeder, I keep my babies until they are 15 weeks old...you should not start vaccinations until the baby is at least 8 weeks old (he is covered by mommas vaccinations until 8 weeks of age), then every 3 weeks he gets another shot....at 8, 11, 14 weeks old....I hold them an extra week just to make sure there are no issues with that last set of shots...I give all my females NeoPar a week before they are bred....then babies get a dose of NeoPar when they are 4 weeks old....that protects them from parvo until they can start their vaccinations at 8 weeks old.

Have the person that you are buying your puppy from to provide you with a vaccination record that has the actual sticker labels from the bottle of the vaccine attached....this verifies what they are telling you is the truth....anyone can tell you they have given the puppy its shots....your vet should demand proof of that or he will want to re-vaccinate that baby....your breeder, if any good at all, knows this and will provide you with the shot record with the actual labels from the bottle attached to the record. To be effective, your baby should have not gotten any vaccinations except the NeoPar, until 8 weeks of age. People that sell puppies before they are 8 weeks old, frequently just lie and say they have gotten their shots....vets will hurry up and want to vaccinate ANY age pup, just to get the $$ for the vaccinations....but these vaccinations shold not be started until that baby is minimum 8 weeks old, then every 3-4 weeks depending on what company you are using, for a total of 3-4 doses, again depending on what company you are using. I NEVER give Lepto shot....make the vet separate it out from the dosage....I changed vets over this because he used a 7 way vaccination and Lepto was in the series and he would not leave it out....Lepto is real tough on Yorkies and if it is not prevalent disease in your area, most vets usually do not even recommend it...if they do give it, give Benadryl 15-30 minutes prior to the Lepto shot, and then stick around in the waiting room following the shot for another 20-30 minutes to see if they are going to have a bad reaction to it. (I must say I sold a baby to a lady, her vet said that was all crazy, he gave the pup its shot, she paid her bill, walked out to the car, got out of the driveway of the vet office, at which time her baby had an anaphylactic reaction, and before she could get turned around and back into the vet, the baby was too near gone...they were not able to revive the baby.....perhaps the next time she buys a baby from a breeder of merit, she will listen to her breeder, because we certainly would NEVER advocate doing or omitting anything that was in the best interest of our precious little babies. THIS event changed the way I do business....I used to let them go at 11 weeks of age, after the first 2 shots....I do NOT let my babies leave here until they are 15-16 weeks old, until they are completely vaccinated, all the vet has to give is a rabies shot.)
