Prednisone twice a day managed it well but vet and I decided to try it just once a day due to long term effects of the drug. I was wondering what medications others have had success with and would recommend. She is not overweight, I have reduced/eliminated allergens in my home in case they are triggers (no carpet, no candles, no sprays), I run a humidifier on a regular basis, keep her in AC in the summer and have a quiet household. We tried a variety of drugs. Our Barney is almost 16 and has a very severe collapsing trachea. We tried a bunch of meds and nothing worked for him except high doses of Hycodan. He takes 1/2 a pill every 6 hours. He's 8 lbs and started at 1/4 tablet and did well for a year when we made the decision to increase to a maximum dose. It worked very well and it's all I use. I have other drugs on hand for emergencies but have not had to use them. Butorphanol is very expensive but I found it cheaper as a compounded pill from diamondback drugs (mail order).
I wanted to add that I find that steam from a Vicks vaporizer works better than a humidifier. It's about $15 at Walmart or Amazon for a warm most vaporizer. I do not use the vapor packets or anything in it. But for us, hycodan literally saved his life - and it had to be the high dose - and he's doing great.
