Perhaps before doing anything else, you should volunteer at an animal shelter. Pets, especially dogs and especially Yorkies, are a huge responsibility and require work, dedication, consistency, training, and time. Since you've never owned a dog, I think spending time caring for and learning about dogs in general would be very beneficial and enlightening. Also, you'd be around people who have a wealth of knowledge and personal experiences to share. I think you'd find working in a shelter before getting any canine would be invaluable! Long periods away from a dog is difficult on any dog, but again, Yorkies are exceptional and need close, human contact---the more of it the better; it's really not fair to get any animal only to regularly leave it alone for long periods of time---and a Yorkie would be miserable. I think it's great you came to this site for help and I'm sure you'll get a wide variety of opinions and excellent advice from the intelligent and caring people here...!
