I switched nail trimmers to one with a safety plate.... only lets a certain amount of the nail get trimmed.... it's not an idiot proof safety system, but it does help lessen the likelihood of an over cut on a nail. For $8-12 it's paid for itself 10x over. It's odd, these lil guys are harder to hold to clip nails than my bigger dogs of the past were. Sounds like your pup will be just fine... based on your description.
