My Yorkie has bacteria infection that won't go away. SIBO Hi, I have lurked for the last couple months trying to find someone who might be have had a similar experience, thought I would finally just join and post.
My yorkie Jake is 4 years old, I rescued him from a shelter 4 months ago. About a month after I got him, he started having a cough. At first I thought it was kennel cough or tracheal, then he has bloody diarrhea and I took him to the vet.
They gave him fluids and blood work and sent me home with Flagyl and FortiFlora and Science Diet ID and half a Pepsid at night.
He seemed to immediately get better, the cough went away and his poop firmed up. Great right, well about 2 weeks after his last Flagyl, he started having symptoms again.
Back to the vet, went and got him a sonogram. Everything came back normal.
More Flagyl, same deal and he got better.
Once again after he gets off Flagyl, he starts having loose stools, blood, gagging cough, stomach gurgling noises.
I contacted his shelter to ask them about what he was being fed, because I initially blamed the Blue Buffalo I gave him, so they told me they gave him a grain free food from Wallmart and that his previous family gave him Iams, so I went and bought Iams and at first his poop firmed up a little from the Science Diet, so I though that might be it, but then the mucus and blood came.
Called my Vet, she was out of town, so an older vet that is there read Jake's file and said its not the food, that he has a lot of bacteria in his small intestines. She acted like it was fairly common and put him on Flagyl again, said this would probably be the final round he needs to solve the problem.
So I guess my question is, anyone have a clue what's going on here?
I want to get him on Nature's Balance, which is what my Maltese eats, but I'm back on the Science Diet rn cos I read chicken was inflammatory and the Iams had chicken in it.
Also I'm just worried about all this Flagyl killing the good flora in his gut. Of coarse I realize he needs it to kill the bad Bacteria but I don't know what gave or what is giving him bad bacteria?
Any suggestions? |
