We use a Rubbermaid type box that is about a foot high, and we keep it in a closet in the laundry room with sliding doors that we keep cracked open for the cats.

Until recently, we only had our golden retriever, but he was notorious for getting in the litter box. This has worked to keep him out. I think the box should work to keep out our little Yorkie too, but she's only 11 weeks right now.

Also, I find that the area stays much cleaner with the bigger, deeper box. With the traditional litter pans, they would throw litter everywhere.
