I usually put in some coconut oil and work at the mat with my fingers, then a fine tooth comb. Some swear by cornstarch but I have not tried it. If she has a pretty even coat, just a few mats I would work on them, but if she is a hot mess or a choppy coat, I would shave down and start fresh. She'd probably appreciate the short cut for the summer anyway.

If she gets restless, just do a few mins and then let her be. Then go back in an hour or so and try to work on it again. Don't try to get it all in one go. Most likely you will be a little rougher and she might get scared.
