Just went through this with the inlaws. Their roof was past it's life so their insurance forced them to replace it, or wouldn't cover it in the event of storm damage. We are 17 years into our roof with 30 year shingles. I'm not sure if were to have storm damage that will be pro-rated or not. There is a lot that comes into play here, it depends on what kind of policy you buy, the life span of your roof/shingles, and who you're dealing with. If I could recommend anything, it would be to hire your own adjuster for a second opinion.
