Default Tips on over stimulation?

I don't want her to get to that point. I figured out when she was running and digging, then barking at my daughter that she was WAY over stimulated. Her little heart was beating a mile a minute, too. Right now the poor little gal's eyes are drooping. I've looked before asking but probably not looking or using terms correctly. I'm guessing with her it's the digging, but, I might see some other cues in the future. What I want to know is, when it gets to that point, is a time out the only way? Asking her to calm helped, and holding her close helped, but it didn't do the trick completely. Crate time out? And, if there are threads on this, I'd love to know where, and I'd be more than happy to read them.
