That's probably because most popular pictures of Yorkies are when they're full adult with the puppy-cut (teddy bear) hair. They're never known for their beautiful multi-colour hair-changing stage!
Speaking of which, I always get asked by strangers on the street who don't know Yorkies, if Scottie is a Silky Terrier; I think because they see he has silky hair? So you're not the only one who interacts with people who only know the Yorkie as the 'teddy bear Yorkies'.
And then these strangers ask me if he's a teacup...and I'm thinking, don't get me started
