When my last Yorkie was 13 we stopped putting her under for dental. She was already on a monthly anesthesia-free regime and we stuck with that as it seemed to work well for her.
Truly, once we got her on the monthly regime, her teeth were never better. For her at least, it seemed to work much better in keeping her teeth healthy then yearly full dentals when she was put under. But when she was younger, we did a combination of the two.
In our area we have the option of other 15-20 minute monthly dentals or 1 hour dentals (done a few times a year)---all anesthesia-free. Some groomers offer these services, but ensure that your dog is under the supervision of a vet for this. We take our dogs to a local vet who gets a dental service in for the monthly service, with the vet supervising the whole time.
