I thought is was pretty interesting as I always regarding the AKC as a good organization from everything I heard about them. My dogs aren't AKC registered since they are rescues but if the article is accurate than it changes my opinion of the AKC some what.
I was wondering what other's felt about this article. The AKC: Worst in Show : The Humane Society of the United States |
Wow this is a complex and complicated arena. AKC is far from perfect - but we need to ask ourselves the pertinent question of why companion animals are regulated by APHIS and the USDA? They are the ones that license and inspect large scale breeders sic commercial breeding facilities and issue licenses for same. One key question is should puppies and adults be reared and in the case of adults kept in a large scale breeding facility. How are the important benchmarks for puppy rearing met? Socialization to humans the household - prebreeding screening tests etc? Just exactly how many breeding dogs is too many?
Our registration bodies to a very large extent have relied on membership dues - show fees and yes puppy litter registration fees. So it is no wonder that the AKC wants to register *commercial kennels* ones that have been licensed by the USDA and have passed all their inspections!
