A "hot spot" is a layman's term for what is an overgrowth of the normal staph intermedius on a dog's skin. When the staph is overgrown, this causes a skin infection called pyoderma. The infection can be diffuse (all over the body) or localized (aka a "hot spot"...which is what you're seeing. Like a scab, hot spots can take a couple weeks to fully heal over bc the skin can be compromised.

Most often, hot spots or diffuse pyoderma are secondary to allergies. Does your kiddo have enviro allergies...? Does he chew or lick his paws, or itch?

Recurrent skin infections, however, should be really explored bc that can mean different things....Cushings, thyroid issue etc...
