They put him on doxycycline and told me that if I was worried about the murmur that I could look further into it with some testing but felt the cough was unrelated. I did some research and went back for his follow up appointment. I asked what grade his murmur was and was told it was grade two but was told again that they were not concerned about it as it was mild and happens as they age and the cough was due to it being winter and having the heat on in the house and that they would do a chest xray to give me piece of mind. All of the info that I have read says that a coughing dog with a heart murmur is a cause for concern! I am having the chest xray done next week but this is driving me crazy with worry. Any thoughts? Even with the heart murmur at grade two shouldn't they put him on meds??

I went thru something similar with one of my girls, I had them do an echo after the heart xray. It gave me piece of mind.

I know when you start digging online you can find a ton of stuff to cause worry, I surely did.

This is pretty common in yorkies, I do suggest a humidifier for the house if it ends up the cough is from the dry heat. I also give mine a little manuka honey for coughs, it works wonders and it's great for their immune systems.
