Top knots, and long hair is totally acceptable for male yorkies. As long as you take care of his hair every day, it's no problem for the Yorkie either. My cousin thinks I'm trying to make my dog look like a female because I keep his hair long, and put a top knot on his head, but I'm not. I don't know how else to explain, but top knots just look good on yorkies.
