Never dealt with this, so just a weird thought...can you keep an air horn around to blow every time he jumps, in the hope it scares him out of the behaviour?
A good scare that stops the behaviour is better than than broken bones or worse, BUT there may be more detractions from doing this (distracting him so he lands poorly, etc..). First, let others chime in.
Maybe just use the air horn when he gets on the back of the couch to stop the potential for the behaviour?? Never tried an air horn around a dog before, so no idea of their reaction.
