Unlove Knee Caps

Well, Binxie has a knee cap that goes out of place. He'll need surgery to correct this issue. On 1/17/16 he jumped off the couch like he's done a million times but this times a d it's not a high couc, he yelped and favored his back left leg and couldn't put weight on it. So on 1/18 he went to the vet and we found out about the knee cap and the reason he yelped was he pulled a tendon when he jumped off the couch.
So now he's on Carprofen for inflammation and pain.
This slipping knee cap is very common and a surgery will correct it.
The surgery intails deepening the area where the knee cap sits so it won't slip out of place any more and the dog won't be able to be on it for six weeks for healing.
Is this the start of a ling time of issues with his little legs? I thought this stuff showed up when they were babies, not at a year and almost four months. Does anyone here have experience on this and give me pointers as to what I can do to help him withoutthe surgery ? I've got stairs for him but he's a stubborn and spirited little man.
I feel like I've failed him some how.
So any advice I can get would be great.
His tendon is getting better but his knee slips alot.
It's never done that until he pulled the tendon.
It breaks my heary when he sits down while playing and looks at me and sighs when his little knee slips. He was gettingthe into bed via his steps with my fieance and his leg gave out on him and he didn't make it up, he tumbled down to the floor. My finance had to pick him up and put him in the bed. That broke both our hearts.
So any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
