Purebred or not, that ACA registry is a red flag! If the breeder is asking more than a few hundred dollars then I would walk away. Likely they are not.

That being said, just bc a dog is AKC registered doesn't mean they are worth $2000 either. You have to do your homework and what is covered under the health guarantee? If the contract only protects the breeder and not the buyer, that tells you something. If the guarantee is only for a week or 72 hours, that tells you something. Genetic defects don't usually show up for years.

Another thing to think about, many breeders will advertise AKC pups and then say oops I don't have the papers I will mail them to you. Guess what, you didn't get AKC papers. By then who would return the dog? I'll bet you won't even be able to get a reply by that time. If the parents are AKC and the pups are not, the breeders were NOT allowed to breed the dogs! That is why those other registries exist. Mostly for people who bought AKC dogs on a limited contract and bred them anyway. They know "papered" dogs sell for more than unpapered, and they know a LOT of people don't know the difference in the registries.
