Could be ring worm...and btw, won't necessarily be patterned in a "ring" in dogs.
If it's from the crate though, I'd be asking myself just how much stress he's under when in the crate if he's rubbing fur off. In my experience, only those animals who hate crating tend to do this. I've never crated, instead used the Iris Pen...bc all of mine despise the crate and I can't blame them.
