Hi, I live in the foothills of the Smokeys, so very beautiful. I have hiked some trails with my Yorkie in a carry bag. Depending on what trails you plan on hiking, some are very steep & hard to navigate, I would be concerned balance might be an issue w/a back pack. You can search trails on Smokey Mountain web site & it will tell you how far & the difficulty.
Also, just to let you know, a lot of hiking trails say no pets.
I really hope that means dogs on a leash or just walking. I have taken my little one on several & no one has said anything.
