Confused! The vet that I have used for many years retired and sold his office. He was always a great help when we were expecting to whelp a litter. But, he has retired and the new owner seems to have some different philosophies regarding care of the bitch and weaning her pups.
Years ago my old vet taught me how to use goats milk to mix with puppy dry food to make a mixture for the babies. He also said it was okay for me to allow the bitch to consume the milk product as well, while she was nursing. Now my new vet says No! No goats milk unless I'm replacing milk for an ill or neglected pup! He says absolutely no goats milk for the bitch!
My bitch is due to whelp within the next 12-24 hrs (her temp is 98.6) but I would like to know what's best for the bitch and her pups. Why no goats milk replacement formula? The vet says consuming the goats milk causes an over abundance of calcium and it causes the puppy to stop producing its own calcium. |
