I used a human baby onesie instead of the cone. Seems like it would be more comfortable for them. Just use the outer snaps to go around the tail. Some have three snaps so just don't use the center one, but I think most only have two. the front of the onesie for a human goes on the back for the dog.
Usually after two or three days are back to normal.
