It's really a personal preference...& dependent on the hair style.

I have one in a puppy cut year round & he has a very short snout/ muzzle, so I keep the hair between his nose short. When it grows out, the hair starts poking his eyes & it causes tearing.

It also looks nice grown out, the weight of the hair will help keep it down. I have 3 w/top knots & longer between the nose hairs.

Once cut, it's VERY hard to grow out. Causes lots of tearing & along w/that, red tear stains which is more visible on lighter faces. Takes lots of patience (don't reach for those scissors! LOL) & daily face wipes, sometimes multiple x's a day.
