There IS a tool that will work -- a bark stop collar. I normally DO NOT recommend them but it might be the only way for you to get a 20 - hour drive worth of peace. One of my trainers had to go with the collar. Said he put it on for a week every time they stepped out the door. Batteries were in place. After that first week, he removed the batteries and put the collar on the dog. Dog never did any noise after that week.
LEAVE the batteries IN for your 20-hour drive. You don't want him to figure it out mid-drive -- NO batteries means I CAN SCREAM AGAIN!!
