Never had the experience of losing a dog, but many of my friends have and it takes some a long time to get over it. While I've heard, "I'll never get another dog," or "Nothing can replace (fill in the blank)," another dog usually does the trick.
My neighbor lost Ella. A few weeks later they got Bella. You'd never know Ella was gone.
