We lost our beloved, Milo, suddenly last summer. He was only three years old and his passing was a huge shock. My husband and I cried for weeks. The pain does subside after a time. It never really goes away completely. I miss him as I am writing this. I am so sorry for your loss and my heart aches for you. It takes time to walk through the grief you are feeling.
