Personally, I don't believe in crate training if the dog actually hates it - it's way too confining and unnatural in my opinion. Instead, we bought the Iris pen (walmart or amazon) and used that for ours when they were puppies.
And btw, yes, there have been pups who've hurt themsleves trying to get out of confinement.
