I know how frustrating that is. Beowulf used to do this too he actually still does sometimes. Have you tried cleaning it with the pad first? That's what I did and told him "potty here" and pointed in the middle. I also got a pack of disinfecting wipes from costco cause I too got tired of using all the paper towels for his messes
