If the discharge is white, sounds like it could be hair in the eyes. I use a wet cotton ball to clean around the eye and drizzle water into the eye to help remove hair or anything else that may have gotten into the eye.

Usually allergies or other problems will produce yellowish or greenish discharge. That should always be checked by a vet.
