As everyone else says, never use a collar and leash, only use a harness and leash.
I have a 3.5 month old puppy, and I bought an IRIS pen on Amazon, along with a couple of whelping pads to put underneath. You need at least two whelping pads, so you have a clean one to replace the dirty one when you wash it. In the IRIS en, I have her bed, water and food, and a UGO potty, (also on Amazon) that uses disposable pee pads. This system works GREAT!
Buy a variety of toys, one that squeaks, a ball that rolls, a teething toy, a rubber toy that you can put treats in, etc.
