Usually the cPL is only done once as a diagnostic tool. If a dog is vomiting and very painful and has elevations in lipase and amylase, it is indicative of pancreatitis, but not set in stone. Even the cPL is not perfect, but it is then done to further pinpoint what is going on. Ultrasound is usually done next. Their lab values are rechecked during the hospitalization to see if the amylase and lipase are improving with the therapy....and often they are also checking liver enzymes, the BUN and creatinine and glucose since all of those may be askew from dehydration due to the vomiting. Often the protein and albumin...even calcium can be off. Pancreatitis is an extremely serious condition. I personally always go straight to the 24 hour hospital I use in Houston so that my pups are in ICU ... if you had a chance to see the thread about my George, he would have died if I had not taken him there.
