My first yorkie did that a lot. And I mean a lot... But she would go out to potty in our garage and I'm not sure if she would freak out or hear mice but she made holes everywhere just like that. Is there a way for you to place a trap back there? Like an attic or something? If it's a rat or a mouse that should take care of the problem from him digging
