Hi

. Your Mom's dog likely has environmental allergies, sadly - and he's basically being punished for addressing his symptom (licking/chewing his paws). When dogs have allergic responses, the histamine reaction causes their paws to feel VERY uncomfortable, irritated, and itchy as heck -- this is why allergy dogs chew/lick their paws. I would never punish this behavior. Instead, the symptom should be properly diagnosed and then treated accordingly. PLEASE don't punish a symptom for this poor little dog. Good luck

.

Very interesting, I've never heard of this! He does cough sometimes but he has a collapsing throat he was born with, whenever he is too excited he starts snorting and spluttering .
Thanks for replies! We are off for a walk x |
With his pre-existing throat condition, he is then that much more likely to be vulnerable to GERD bc of what's happening structurally to that entire area.
I would not under any circumstances look into the spray thing and then punish him for licking. It's either a genuine symptom of something physical -or- it's psychological -- and either way, neither of them warrant any sort of intervention that could be interpreted as punishment. (I'm not at all implying you were thinking of punishing...I'm just pointing this out bc the earlier poster seemed to view this as an option.)
Have a GREAT walk
