Spectra 9 is a vaccine that is sold over the counter to pet owners. It is typically recommended as the third shot in a series of vaccines for larger/standard size breed puppies (preceded by five and six and a precursor yet still to ten). As was stated, it does contain lepto-spirosis and not too long ago (maybe ten years?) a batch of lepto vaccine in particular caused many very bad reactions, including death, primarily among small breed dogs.
We choose to get our vaccines through the vet and my reasoning for doing so (I actually work at a place where we sell vaccines OTC and many dogs are getting protection from dangerous and deadly diseases that otherwise might not and I am grateful these vaccines are available and parvo is flippin rampant here in the Portland area) is because I prefer to separate Lilahs vaccines both to limit the likelihood of a reaction and to be able to track and determine the cause of a reaction should there ever be one. We also pre treat with Benadryl to play on the side of caution- these little guys operate on a different level. Our vet felt that in our area and with Lilahs farm country exposure that a lepto vaccine was appropriate. They assured me that the batch of lepto that small dogs reacted to was long ago and that lepto from the vet is typically safe for small breed dogs these days (of course any dog can have a vaccine reaction at any time) - disclaimer, this is what my vet told me, not what i am determining as a lay person outside of the medical field. I am always open to new information and love gaining knowledge so please reciprocate with me, that is why I enjoy forum communication
- we opted to adhere to his advice and have never had a vaccine reaction- that said, if we decided to vaccinate OtC as a combo vaccine, I would not choose any that included lepto (spectra 9,10) and would use only spectra 5 or 6.
