Usually it's older dogs that get diabetes - not young ones. I learned at a routine vet visit that my dog had diabetes - and then realized that I had noticed that someone was drinking more water around my house. I had two dogs and a cat. But there was no doubt that I was filling their water bowls oftener.

Anyway - she was worked up and went on two insulin shots a day (for the rest of her life). Unfortunately, I lost her from something else two years later. The shots are so easy to give; she didn't mind them at all. I know she couldn't even feel them. And, she did well. If she was given her shots faithly (which she was), she was perfectly healthy and had no problems at all. The only problem for me was that I had to be home at a certain time twice a day to give her her injections. This really made me stick close to home for those two years. But then - who wouldn't do this!

Good luck!
